Social Media and Networking in Music Streaming Services (Bandcamp/Spotify): Conclusion

Image
After the many posts that have been written about Spotify and Bandcamp, here is my conclusion. Honestly speaking, with the existence of music streaming services, who needs CD's and iTunes music libraries? A revoluton?  These music streaming services not only let users connect with the music that's provided in their databases. At the Spotify side, its integration with Facebook and Twitter allows users to connect with friends and/or family with similar music taste and/or showing people what kind of music you listen to with the choices or preferences in music selection may be taken as suggestions or recommendations to our friends and eventually inadvertently inspiring our friends, and the music listening habits that happen later. Spofty has literally evolved our way of interacting with our friends. Back then, we used to tell our friends to "listen to this", or "listen to that" But thanks to Spotify, we can follow playlists, you don't ...

Social Media and Networking in Music Streaming Services (Bandcamp/Spotify): Which one is better?

Image
After covering both music streaming services, it is now time for us to focus on which is better. Spotify vs. Bandcamp Starting with the similarities, for a start they are both streaming services with a huge database of music to listen to.  Spotify has over 20,000 songs added per day Spotify's rising popularity is due to its abundance of music in its library and its ability to create and share personalised playlists. Spotify's utilisation of the social media aspect of things is more external rather than internal compared to Bandcamp. As mentioned in my 2nd post, the social media aspect comes in with its integration with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more. "Especially with its compatibility with Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, we can share the music we're listening to via Spotify's inbox system to our Facebook friends, or we can share them on your timeline." Share away the songs and albums you're ...

Social Media and Networking in Music Streaming Services (Bandcamp/Spotify): Introduction to Bandcamp

Image
Spotify is not the only music streaming service that managed to integrate social media elements into its app or website. Bandcamp is another recent good example on how social media was integrated into its own services. But before we continue, time for the introduction to Bandcamp: What is Bandcamp? Bandcamp is a customisable micro-site that allows musicians to upload music they've created for sharing. This is what a typical artist's bandcamp page looks like Bandcamp also allows for artists to offer free music downloads with the option to donate to the artist or to receive a free track or album by joining the artist's email list. As a social network: Bandcamp isn't only open just for artists.  A typical bandcamp page for non-artists Non-musicians/music fans are able to showcase their Bandcamp music collections, follow their favourite artists, explore the music of their contemporaries, add items to a wishlist, and more. Its availabi...

Social Media and Networking in Music Streaming Services (Bandcamp/Spotify): Spotify's integration with Social Media

Image
Music is something that most of us enjoy in our everyday lives. Some of us also would like to share around the music that we've been enjoying to our friends. Is Spotify a Social Media platform? In my opinion, no it's not. But as I mentioned before in my previous post, which is an introduction, Spotify is actually well on its way to becoming one.  Names and profile pictures have been censored for the sake of the privacy of my friends. Having the ability to view your friend activity and being able to "follow" your Facebook friends on Spotify makes this music streaming service almost like a social media platform already. Not only does Spotify allow users to connect with their favourite music and artists (by letting us "follow" them), it also allows us to connect with our friends through the streaming platform's integration with Facebook. I can follow my favourite artist/band on Spotify to keep track on their latest releases ...

But before I go into further details, I'd like to give you a brief introduction on what Spotify is. What is Spotify? Spotify is a music streaming service that was officially launched in 7th October, 2008 developed in Stockholm, Sweden. Spotify's old logo (2008-2012) Spotify was initially only available via invite only to  in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, the UK, France and Spain when it went live in 2008.
